Melbourne City celebrated their first A-League silverware as a narrow 1-0 triumph over Central Coast Mariners secured the Premiers Plate amid a dramatic finish at AAMI Park.
Craig Noone s headed effort just shy of the hour was enough to earn City the three points and the trophy with three games to spare, but only after enduring a tense finale.
City thought the points were wrapped up when Jamie Maclaren netted with three minutes to play, only for the hosts striker to be denied when a VAR check found he had handballed in the build-up when tussling with Kye Rowles.
The Mariners then thought they had a chance to snatch a point in injury time when goalkeeper Mark Birighitti up at a late corner won the visitors a penalty.
But once again, VAR intervened with ref…
Leeds United have completed the signing of Scotland striker Ross McCormack from Cardiff City for an undisclosed fee. The 24 year old has signed a three year contract that will keep him at Elland Road till June 2013.
McCormack, a Rangers youth product, left the Gers in 2006 for Motherwell. In his time at Ibrox, he was also sent out on loan to Doncaster Rovers. In the summer of 2008, he was transferred to Cardiff for £110,000 and had a tremendous 08/09 season that saw him score 23 times in 44 appearances for the Bluebirds. He was the subject of a rejected £4m bid from Hull City last summer.
McCormack could make his Leeds debut this weekend against Watford.

Ruben Dias admits Manchester City cannot rely on experience alone as they bid to repeat last season’s stunning treble success.
The champions moved back within a point of Premier League leaders Liverpool with a 3-1 derby win over rivals Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
That sets up a huge showdown with the Merseysiders at Anfield next weekend and they face the other team in the title race, Arsenal, later this month.
While they will also hope to progress in the Champions League and FA Cup, City’s impressive track record over the course and distance could be a significant – but Dias insists there is far more to it than that.
The City defender said: “Every new year it is a new challenge and every new year we must overcome what we’v…
Luca Antonelli expects a Sampdoria side reinvigorated by the arrival of new coach Vincenzo Montella to provide a stern test for AC Milan at San Siro on Saturday in a Serie A clash that will put Sinisa Mihajlovic in the spotlight.
Current Milan boss Mihajlovic will be going up against his previous employers at the weekend, though there will be little room for sentimentality.
An away defeat to Juventus last time out leaves Milan in seventh place in the table, already 10 points behind leaders Inter and outside of the European qualification spots.
Antonelli knows Sampdoria under Montella will be determined to spark a change in fortunes.
We re expecting a tough game, partly because Sampdoria have just changed coach, and because every team which comes t…
Sanfrecce Hiroshima set up a clash with River Plate in the Club World Cup semi-finals by overcoming TP Mazembe 3-0 in Osaka.
The J.League champions made their set-pieces count as they improved upon their 2012 performance when they were eliminated at the quarter-final stage by African side Al Ahly.
Sanfrecce took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Tsukasa Shiotani converted from Yusuke Chajima s corner.
The Japanese team enhanced their lead early in the second half when Kazuhiko Chiba headed home from another Chajima set-piece and the 2015 CAF Champions League winners were unable to find a route back into the game.
Second-half substitute Takuma Asano added a third third in the closing stages, meaning Mazembe will play America in the fifth-place p…
Kevin Gameiro staked his claim to start Atletico Madrid s Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid on Tuesday by hitting a double in a resounding 5-0 LaLiga victory over Las Palmas, who finished the match with 10 men.
France international Gameiro was in Diego Simeone s first XI for the first time since a 3-1 victory over Sevilla on March 19 and made his mark with two impressive first-half goals at the Estadio Gran Canaria on Saturday.
The striker turned home the opener inside two minutes and added his second after a Saul Niguez header had made it 2-0, Atletico scoring three goals inside the opening 20 minutes of a LaLiga game for the first time since 1957.
Gameiro was denied his hat-trick by the post before Simeone opted to rest him ahead of the upcoming C…
Last season every week we were talking about Liverpool or Everton, all the clubs that were interested in him.
We can speak about it again. For me Doucoure is a great player, a very important player for us. I do not know what will happen.
It doesn t surprise me other clubs want to sign him because he is a very good player.
These are the words of Watford manager Javi Gracia, as speculation continues over the future of Abdoulaye Doucouré. The 25 year old has been a revelation for the Hornets ever since making his permanent switch to Vicarage Road from Rennes back in 2016, and now, the talk about him moving away from the club is louder than ever.
While he still seems to enjoy playing for Watford, nobody can deny that he has a great opportunity to move t…
The Nintendo Switch won’t have a Twitch app for much longer. Twitch has announced that the official Twitch app will be removed from the eShop on November 6. Anyone who currently has the app installed can continue to use it until support is dropped for everyone on January 31, 2024.
In a statement where it spelled Nintendo’s name incorrectly, Twitch said it recommends that people watch Twitch on their browser, mobile phone, or other device instead. Obviously, this is far from ideal for people who were enjoying Twitch on the Switch. Come from Sports betting site VPbet

Premier League club executives have been accused of “parking the bus” over a new cash offer for the EFL.
Hopes had been raised by top-flight sources of an offer finally being made on Monday, with a deal projected to be worth an extra £900million over six years to the 72 clubs having been on the table.
However, Premier League clubs did not vote on an offer and are instead focused on bringing in a replacement to the controversial profitability and sustainability rules (PSR).
The delay has already faced criticism from former Manchester United captain Gary Neville, and now Dame Caroline Dinenage, the chair of the Culture, Media and Sport (CMS) committee has spoken out.
“The longer this deadlock goes on, the more the stated commitment from Premier Leagu…
Josh Cullen has admitted the Republic of Ireland have no-one to blame but themselves after defeat in Greece ripped apart their Euro 2024 qualification hopes.
Stephen Kenny’s men headed for Athens in bullish mood after a creditable performance as they went down 1-0 to World Cup runners-up France in their opening Group B fixture in March.
With the Netherlands also waiting in the wings, they knew victory over Gus Poyet’s men – or certainly something more than the 2-1 defeat they ultimately suffered at the OPAP Arena – would be required if they were to prosper, but in the event, they were outplayed for long periods and emerged with what they deserved.
It ends in Athens. |
